Effect and Areas of Use
A double-blind study showed that topical application of chamomile extract is useful for wound healing. In this study, chamomile extract has evidently recovered the scars that occur after getting tattoos erased. Again, in a clinical study which compares hydrocortisone, bufexamac (NSAID) and fluocortin (glucocorticoid), and chamomile cream on eczema, the chamomile cream was found as effective as hydrocortisone for treatment. In an experimentally induced study on toxic dermatitis, the chamomile ointment had a soothing effect. In another study, the chamomile cream had a protective effect against damage caused by radiation on breast cancer patients. Commission E authorized the topical use of chamomile for skin and mucous membrane inflammations, and bacterial skin diseases. Chamomile cream is used as an anti-inflammatory for skin and mucosa inflammations in cosmetology. It has anti-inflammatory, comforting, itch relieving, moisturizing, cleaning and wound healing properties. It also has irritation reducing, softening feature. Chamomile has recuperative effect for psoriasis, eczema and acne type of skin problems. It has been used dermatologically and for mucosal irritation (eczema and mucositis) in randomized clinical studies.
