Polyphenols, which constitute 30% of green tea are strong antioxidants. Animal models and studies conducted on human subjects have shown that systemic and local use of green tea polyphenols before UV radiation may provide anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effect.
Sun burn cells as a parameter of acute UV damage decrease by 66% when green tea polyphenols are applied 30 minutes before UV contact. It has been shown that the functions of Langerhans cells which are damaged with UV radiation also recovered by 58%.
